Open Source Bibliography, 3rd Edition
05/01/2002When we published the first O'Reilly & Associates books in 1985, we'd already been working in the computer industry for seven years. As a technical writing consulting company, we'd written manuals for hundreds of computer products. In the process, we realized that most manuals and computer books didn't reflect how people really learn about technology. So we set out to create a new kind of computer book, one that captured the over-the-shoulder learning experience of people inside the industry, written by experts whose deep knowledge came from hands-on experience.
The O'Reilly Network, the essential portal for developers interested in open and emerging technologies, builds not only on our book publishing experience, but also on our ten years of web publishing. With sites including xml.com, ONJava.com, www.perl.com, ONLamp.com, and MacDevCenter.com, the O'Reilly Network covers important technologies in the trademark O'Reilly style--independent, in-depth, and steeped in the experience of those ahead of the technology curve.
Safari Tech Books Online, an around-the-clock online resource, brings the complete contents of hundreds of computer books--O'Reilly and "the best of the rest"--to you. You will find answers on the fly with a quick search through Safari's rich collection of technical knowledge. We've partnered with other top technical publishers to bring a treasure trove of high-end technical references to the Web. With our flexible subscription model, you pay only for the information you want and receive free full-text searches across hundreds of books. With the easy-to-use web interface, you can customize your own online library.
We launched our conference business back in 1997, when our first annual Perl Conference brought the Perl community together for the first time. It was a smashing success, so we expanded our conferences to include other important technologies. O'Reilly conferences are truly catalytic events--they bring innovators together to shape the revolutionary ideas that spark new industries.
Our goal is to create products we ourselves would want to use. Whatever form it takes--books, conferences, or online--we want anything from O'Reilly to be useful, interesting, and truthful. We believe that there are plenty of intelligent, discriminating people in the world who value those qualities as deeply as we do.
Open source software is changing the nature and the very future of the software industry. In 2001, open source broke through as a clear choice for the enterprise. This year, Linux and Mac OS X are putting open source software on millions of new desktops, while emerging fields such as bioinformatics are creating exciting new opportunities for open source developers.
To help you figure out where and how everything fits together--and the direction in which you might want to go, we've created what we call the Open Source Bibliography. The collection of books described in this third edition represents what we consider to be the best resources available on open source technologies. And we didn't just select our own publications. We've carefully chosen the best two or three books on each topic, regardless of publisher. We've listened to our customers, searched the Web for user-recommended books, consulted our editors, authors, and reviewers, and talked to booksellers who specialize in technical books. We hope our research continues to provide you with a valuable tool for building your own open source library.
